F-150 Lightning cold weather performance

Ford engineers took the F-150 Lightning to a military base in Alaska in 2022 for a 12-day testing period in bitterly cold temperatures which dropped to minus 34°C. The engineers were impressed with the truck's dual motors that work together seamlessly to deliver power to the ground. They’ll give you confidence when driving in snowy and icy conditions.

Testing involved driving the F-150 Lightning extensively in different snow conditions, including loose snow, packed-groomed snow, complete ice, half-ice, half-concrete surfaces, and hilly terrains.

The F-150 Lightning is equipped with 4WD, a standard electronic-locking rear differential, and selectable drive modes, allowing it to handle different terrain conditions with ease. Ford has said it is committed to continual battery performance in cold weather conditions.

Ford F-150 Lightning trim levels

In Canada, the Lightning comes in three trim levels: XLT, Lariat, and Platinum. All trim levels come as a four-door SuperCrew cab, a 5x5 bed, and with Sync4. Here’s an overview of the differences between the trim levels to help you decide which model is the right one for your lifestyle. You can find out more by chatting with a sales advisor at your local Go Auto dealership.

XLT: The XLT trim level includes rugged cloth-covered, power-adjustable heated front seats, and colour-coordinated carpet. It features Sync4 on a 12-inch touchscreen display. The side mirror skull caps are black and the grille is a stylish geometric grey-ion fine satin metallic with signature front lighting. Wheels are 20" alloy dark carbonized grey.

Lariat: The Lariat has luxury features such as leather-trimmed seats, a 15-inch productivity screen, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system. A power tailgate with unique signature lighting adds to the luxury. It has a range of advanced safety features such as lane-keeping assist, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Side mirror skull caps are body-coloured, and the distinctive grille is premium geometric grey-ion fine satin metallic with signature front lighting.

Platinum: The Platinum trim level is the top-of-the-line F-150 Lightning trim level and has every feature available on the XLT and Lariat. An extended-range battery is standard on this model. Exclusive add-ons include power-deployable running boards, 22-inch polished aluminum wheels, and a twin-panel moonroof. It also includes a variety of advanced technology features, such as a 360-degree camera system with a split-view display and a larger 15.5-inch touchscreen display.

F-150 Lightning’s towing capacity

The Ford F-150 Lightning offers imposing towing capabilities, thanks to its electric powertrain and robust chassis. Here are the towing capacity figures for both the standard range and extended range battery options.

Standard range battery: The F-150 Lightning with the standard range battery has a maximum towing capacity of 9,000 pounds when properly equipped. This towing capacity is based on a conventional towing setup with a weight-distributing hitch.

Extended range battery: The F-150 Lightning with an extended range battery offers a slightly higher towing capacity, with a maximum capacity of 10,000 pounds. This capacity is also based on a conventional towing setup with a weight-distributing hitch.

Like all pick-up trucks, the F-150 Lightning's towing capacity can vary depending on a range of factors, including the type of hitch used, the weight distribution of the load, and the specific configuration of the truck. Be sure to plan your towing journey and charging stops along the way.

Trailer Tow Connector: This is a standard feature on all F-150 Lightning models and includes a four-pin and seven-pin connector that allows drivers to easily connect and tow a trailer.

Ford Lightning raises EV standards and expectations

The F-150 Lightning is a success for Ford. With independent rear suspension for the first time in the history of the F-150 lineup, the Lightning delivers a noticeably smoother ride.

It's no surprise that at last count more than 200,000 orders have been placed for the Lightning. Ford is aiming to triple production of the Lightning in 2023 to around 150,000 Lightnings at its specialized division at the Rouge Assembly in Michigan for the year.

This level of adoption is a strong indication that the Lightning is no longer seen as an experiment or unique. It has hit mainstream, helping set the pace for EV adoption around the world.
